Does anyone know if I can sharpen 1/2 inch chain on an Oregon chain grinder and what to set angles at?

Do you have a 1/4" wheel for your grinder?

No I don't have one.Are they available anywhere? I have an Oregon Mini Grinder. Is it safe to put 2 smaller wheels together? It is for a 36 inch bar. Too big to sharpen by hand.

Here is a link with the sharping angles that are recommended for the 1/2 and 9/16 pitch chains: houseofhomelite.proboards.com/post/61820Bye the way there is no reason you have to sharpen the chain all at once unless you are in the middle on using the saw and it goes dull. 🤔Takes just as long to file 3 12 inch chains as 1 36 inch one😉.

2 smaller wheel won't work. I searched for a long time just to find a straight 1/4 file to sharpen the one 1/2" chain I have. Your best bet might be to go to a pro shop and see if they sharpen 1/2" harvester chain.

I went to one shop and they wanted to see the chain but I have not removed it yet. This an old hydraulic saw and I am making a power supply out of a Briggs & Stratton and a pump. I got a manual for it from another user here and it calls for a 1/4 inch file. I doubt if I will ever use it. I just want to see it run.

Do you want a 1/4" non-tapered round file to sharpen your chain? If so, I'll see if there is another at the shop where I found mine a couple years ago.

Yes that is what I did.
The 1/4 inch files will work fine for the 9/16 pitch chain as well especially if the chain is not new. After 60 or 70 years most are not!
As the cutters get filed down you need to go to the next size smaller file to keep the angles the same. We are lucky that the 1/4 inch are still available. Remember to check the raker height as that is very critical to getting the saw to cut correctly.
The old girls really like to cut when they are set up right!
