Hello group, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a question about governed carbs? I finished the 903 and it's a beast but it likes to sputter in the high-end but will clear up for a bit then continue. I disassembled the carb as usual and put it in the ultrasonic cleaner and installed HS kit, should I remove the governor and clean it out? Possibly has something stuck or debris inside? I'm going to post a video of what I'm dealing with tonight. Thanks, Al D.

The saw sputters when throttling up and dies in the cut. I've adjusted the low and idle perfectly but can't get the high right. I know there's issues with the 925's carb so wondering if it similar.

My experience with cutting, then dying is that the high speed is adjusted too lean. It starts fine but quickly drops in power. Get the saw fully warmed up, adjust the high speed to a full load cut in a log. Then come back and adjust the low speed needle and idle needle. After the saw is shut down and cooled, it may have some trouble idling and getting going, but when fully warm it will do everything well.

It sounds more like an ignition issue to me. The 903's came with a points ignition and an electronic ignition. You would have to check and see which one you have. I would start with a known good spark plug and if that does nothing to improve it check the plug wire for wear through and contact at the coil and the plug. From there you would have to pull the flywheel and look for frayed wires. If it has points, clean the contacts and gap the points. If you really think it's the carb and you have a good running Super XLAO or another good 900 series carb, pull the carb off that and put it on your 903. It should run fine on that and if it doesn't, start digging into the ignition. I have a t least 20 saws with carb governors and have yet to find a bad one.

This is an early model 903 with points.
