Hi. New member. Glad to have found this forum. I've got an XL that I bought at a thrift store years ago. It cranked but didn't run especially well. I knew diddly squat about chain saws but read a little so now I know slightly more than diddly squat. I replaced all the tubing and duckbills, looked at the gas filter and oil filter which looked ok. Got new air filter element. Don't remember where. Opened and re-crimped the clips on the ignition and ground wires, adjusted the idle, got a new chain, and have been cutting wood with it for a couple of years. Occasional use only. This week it bogged down after a few cuts and killed. Wait a few minutes, it cranks then dies. So I pulled it down again. Whatever was in the vent hole in the fuel tank is awol. I'm guessing a duckbill but not sure. It wasn't in the tank. All of the screws holding both side covers on the carburetor were loose. As in no resistance at all. Carb looks immaculate inside. No trash in the little intake screen. The sheet with the flaps is clean and pliable. Diaphragm nice and springy. Exhaust port reasonably clean. Of course I broke the ground wire connection again disassembling it. The carb is a Tillotson HK. Someone scratched out the first part of what I assume is the serial number and hand engraved 27A below it. Who knows? Ordinarily I chase down the kind of info I need here myself but right now a combination of Bell's palsy and worse than ususal pollen allergy is wreaking havoc with my eyesight and I'm even having trouble following the IPL. Some days better than others. So I'm going to ask a few questions I normally would not need to ask. I posted a link to some photos above. Questions are: What goes in the vent hole in the fuel tank? Should there be lock washers on the carburetor screws? Are fuel resistant wire and clips an auto store item or am I going to have to chase those down? How much endplay should there be in the clutch? I didn't put a gauge on it but a good size screwdriver bit slips right in. Then there are those foreign items like the little rubber fitting on the crankcase housing that I have circled in orange on one of the photos.? And the hole directly above the clutch. It has a spring in it so I assume it's a pump and its location says oil pump. But I'm not sure. Should it be covered with something? I cleaned the crap out of it the best I could. Does it require maintenance? All I can think of. Thanks for the posting of the service manual. I've acquired the user manual as well. I like this saw and would rather use it than one of the disposable variety. Thanks for any replies.
