Super 2 starter cord seems to jam up when pulling to start. Seems like the ignition is firing early, like before TDC on the compression stroke. Any suggestions? After releasing the cord it can be pulled easily, but then it will get stuck again on what seems to be an early ignition event.

Now it pulls the same with the switch on or off. Ain't that the way it always is? The car stops making that weird sound as soon as you get it to the garage.

Does it have a points ignition or electronic ignition? If points check the point gap, if electronic look for a sheared flywheel key.

If your starter pulley bore is worn and wobbles, it will likely bind under load.

The old single wrap starter pulleys were bad about getting distorted so the gap where the rope winds up gets wide in some spots and lets the rope pull down in beside itself. The newer replacement pulley is a double wrap style that seemed to help this issue. If the rope has been replaced with a slightly smaller diameter rope, that just makes the issue even worse. The newer style starter pulley is also more forgiving to different size starter ropes.
I'm obviously not saying that'll solve your kickback problem but it might help your starter rope issue.
