I have a C-5 with a Tillotson 141B. I rebuilt the carb about 5 years ago and have not had any trouble with it. I started it the other day and it would slowly die at idle. There was also a little fuel in the throttle handle/carb chamber of the saw. I took the carb out, took it apart and didn't notice anything. I started it and it ran great and I shut it off. When I came back there was a huge puddle of fuel, like the needle was stuck open. I bought another carb kit and this one had the metal needle, I had a plastic one in there before. I switched the needle seat, needle and needle arm. Put the carb back on and the saw started and ran great. However, there is fuel spray/mist blowing out the air intake of the carb. Not a lot of spray but enough to be a problem. Has anybody had this happen?

Might check the reed valves for proper function-

As far as I can tell the reed is solid. Only a sliver of light shows through and when I try to pull air back through it seals tightly. Is there a specific test or procedure for checking the reed?

I just looked at xl130's post about c-51 reed part. It's a filler block part #58933. It's not listed in the c-5 IPL from 1962 but shows up in the 1964 IPL. I'm guessing that piece fell out when I took off the elbow. Oh well.

I received the filler block today and realized there is no recess for it to fit. I'm going to order an intake elbow from other c series saws that does have the space for the filler block. If the problem is with the reed then this should solve it.

I got a nos elbow with reed from chainsawr. It was covered in sticky grime and the reed was stuck. I ran it through an ultrasonic and it cleaned up beautifully. I put it on the saw and it fired right up. It still sprays some fuel at wot. However, not nearly as much as before. The saw runs amazing, starts right up and idle is perfect. When I pressure tested the carb I found both needles were leaking, but that was the only leak. Any body have some thoughts?

Did you replace the brass needle seat as well?

The washers are both there. The packing material, whatever it was made of, is gone. I'm aware that just because the elbow and reed are new doesn't mean they aren't defective. I already ordered another Tillotson 141. At least I'll have two carbs and two reeds to try together and isolate the problem.

I didn’t read your first post properly. I had thought you were talking about the inlet needle.
My HL rebuild kit came with two O-rings that you need to install as a replacement for the hi & lo jet packing . If I remember correctly (I’ve only rebuilt one HL carburetor) the proper order is needle, spring, washer, O-ring.
Is that how you carburetor went back together? Did your kit come with new o-rings? Is this where your carburetor is leaking? At the hi & lo jets?

I checked the bag again and no o rings. It was a kit from Tillotson. The carb is leaking from both hi and lo jets.

Mine was not a genuine kit. I bought this one. Has a bunch of extra stuff. Some I didn’t use. www.ebay.ca/itm/201815319590It had some hits and misses. The cover gasket didn’t fit right and it did not have the proper inlet screen....... Had the o-rings though!!! Lol

I'm still having the fuel mist coming back out the mouth of the carb. I have tried two different carbs and two different reeds. I have the o rings in place on the adjusting needles and even tried different gaskets/diaphragms in both carbs. Its enough spray that it pools in carb housing.
