I've bought quite a few bars & chains from Archer over the past 2-3 yrs.& have never had a problem until my last purchase. The bar I ordered was a D176 mount for a McCulloch saw that I bought last month & had a good friend from AS go through it & put a new piston kit in it,along with a new adjustable carb,& crank seals & a few other goodies.I wanted to really dress it up with a new 28 in.bar & chain.I was told by the sales rep that the D176 bar wouldn't fit the Mac saws.Of course I thought he was confused & even the description said that the bart was for Homelite saws, which I pointed out that Homelite used D096 & D196 bars, not D176 bars.So just to be on the safe side I put 2 smaller bars (16 in.& 24 in.) on the saw to confirm that the D176 mount was the correct one. They fit perfectly.
I received the new Archer D176 mount 28 in.bar & chain yesterday & went to put them on the SP81 & the bar wouldn't go on the studs.I got the 24 in.Oregon bar & laid it on top of the Archer bar & found that the stud slot hadn't been machined back far enough.I had to file out the slot back another 3/32-1/4 in.before it'd fit on the saw.I wrote to Archer telling them of the problem with their bar & I was told it was my fault for ordering a bar that I was told not to because it wouldn't fit.I tried to explain to him that the D176 mount bar was used exclusively by McCulloch & when it calls for a D176 mount bar, then that's what I'm going to order. The sales rep got a little cocky saying that he's 76 yrs.old & knew what he was doing. He also told me that these D176 bars were made for certain model saws with the D176 mount. How can a D176 mount bar fit one D176 mount saw & not another?I told him that I had two Oregon D176 mount bars that fit the saw without a problem & was told he didn't deal with Oregon bars. That I thought was a pretty ignorant statement.I told him to go to acresinternet.com,then go to Chain Saw Collectors & choose Chain Saws & look up any model he so chose. In short I was pretty much dismissed, but not before I told him that I'd NEVER buy another Archer product again.I remember my dad telling me when I was a teenager that word of mouth can either make you or break you.Probably not so much in today's world, but I'm giving everyone a heads up.I've heard of guys either here or over on AS who've complained about the quality of Archer products & I found it hard to believe, but I'm surely a believer now.
