I had gotten frustrated with this saw a few months back and shelved it due to carburetor issues. I had some spare time so I pulled the SDC and put a HS model in. The HS was in a Super XL922 parts saw. I had to swap the throttle rod and jets. I had a really hard time getting it to start and tune. Unlike the SDC that seemed to be running lean I couldn’t hardly get this ring to idle with the HS. Question: Is there a difference in a HS model that is designed for a 77cc 922 as opposed to a 54cc saw? I’m not sure what the problem was in the end....I noodled around with it for a bit and it seems to idle pretty good and did a few cuts. My first time cutting with a hard nose. Not sure if the saw is a bit tired/underpowered for a 24” full chisel or if it’s just a lot slower cut with a hard nose. youtu.be/xXyrZkTeGZcTest Cuts: youtu.be/niTOsg_avQI

Its running lean because the 54cc saw can't draw as much air as a xl922, air speed is to slow through the carb to pull fuel through the main nozzle. Carbs are sized to a engine

(Duh) I guess I should really take a closer look at the SDC that was originally in the saw and figure out what the problem was with that carb. I also have an HS 7A that I think should be from an XL-12. It has that small inlet fitting though. How hard is it to pull the inlet fittings out and swap them?

Something you have to look at when swapping out carbs - you have to look at the venturi size. The HS carb you put on the saw is way over sized.Basically what you're doing is giving it more fuel than it can burn.I ran into a SXL a couple yrs.back that someone had put a HS26 on in place of the original carb (whatever came on the SXL).I knew the carb was over sized for the saw,but it came in handy when I replaced the HS151 on my SXL-925. A 24 in.bar & chain is an awful lot to put on a 54cc saw.I'd go with a 20 in.at most.On a hard nose bar you'll lose about 15% power loss due to friction. As for changing out the inlet elbows, they're not difficult at all.You just need to get a good hold of the elbow that's in the carb & twist it as you pull it out. Then tap the smaller one back in.

Some carbs have different mix needle tips as well which won't seat properly in another carb.

I put the SDC 1 back on and tested it out. Put one of my 20” Windsor speed tips on it with a full house 3/8 Oregon. Man what a difference! Don’t get me wrong. This saw is not the most powerful by any means but pretty impressive for a 1960’s chainsaw.(I think it’s 1960’s) The saw still needs a lot of general cleaning and repair but it’s earned a spot on the “runner” shelf. EDIT: Added video: Here is a test cut video. Not the hardest wood so it makes the saw look crazy powerful. The saw cut pretty good I think! youtu.be/kWySJOWR9FU

Pretty dang nice running saw if you ask me.BTW,without looking it up I believe the XL-101 was made from about '66-'68.

Terry Industries built XL-101 SN:2648566 .. DOM: approx. early 1968 .
XL-101 production spanned from 1967 - 1970 .
Looks and sounds good !

It’s got a few weird things going on with it that I can’t seem to figure out. Something unusual about the bottom handle bar mounting bracket. It was missing when I acquired it so I put an XL-130 bracket on it that doesn’t fit properly so the handle bar is a bit wonky. It also appears that possibly someone put a new Drive side case on it? No paint on that half and the tank screws are red.... Thanks for the information. You must be part detective to get that Ser# lol!
