I am rebuilding a C-51. I just pulled the clutch assembly and see that there are only 3 shoes in what appears to be a 6 shoe spider.... Is this actually supposed to have 3 shoes?

I don't know if that was an acceptable or common practice, but I think it needs 3 more shoes to operate properly, just my humble opinion.

Not sure, but I think there were 2 options - a 3 shoe clutch & a 6 shoes clutch, but (I might be wrong on this) there were 2 different spiders as well.I've got several C series saws, but haven't had to pull the drums off to service the clutch on any of them.I did have a C5 that was seized tight as a drum & I ended up having to break the spider into pieces to get the clutch assembly off.The PO had let the saw sit outside in the elements for a number of yrs.I still haven't managed to get the cylinder off the piston,Lol.

I noticed in the IPL that it lists 3 shoes for the spider....interesting!? The original xl12’s were like that only 3 shoes even though the spider would hold 6 shoes.
