Hello all.
I know this is a LONGSHOT, but I am looking for Homelite part # A-97690, description is Housing-Engine ( I call it the frame of the saw). I do not necessarily need a NOS part, I am open to used in good shape if the price is right. I got my saw pinched last weekend and a buddy of mine ripped the damned handle/trigger off my saw. It was cracked already and I baby'ed it, knowing eventually it would break. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
-Matt

It is on the Homelite model 540. Seems to be a very hard to find part I am wishing it was a 8800 model- I may have a better chance of repairing it!

That part is going to be extremely difficult to find.

Yeah I agree, probably just end up having to buy a parts saw. That might not be so bad as the 540's and 545's were hard on pistons and cylinders if I recall correctly. Might find one that's burnt up.
Years ago I had to buy a parts saw to get a coil for my 8800. I fixed that saw and sent it down the road for about what I gave for it new. I have much better luck finding parts for my 450, 925s, 1050 and 750:)

Yes, I have been looking now for over a month and to no avail. I like the weight of the saw even with the vulnerability of the plastic body, but I think I may move on and look for a different model, preferably something made of metal. Although, the orange & white brand has come out with a nice looking fuel injected engine that can handle a 36" bar but price is roughly $1600 and there's a waiting list! Gotta cut and sell a lot of wood by spring to decide on my next purchase/project, lol!

One will pop up eventually. Your situation sounds a lot like me and my 8800. When I sold it I was pretty much determined to buy a nice new saw to replace it. I looked at the orange plastic stuff but just couldn't do it. I got pretty serious about a Dolmar but ended up just buying big old Homelites and fixing them up.

Just hang in there and hopefully one will show up soon enough. I think it was somewhere around 3 years or more before I ever found the first piston for a 750 after starting to look. Stuff's out there, just takes time and patience. If you need a saw soon, I agree with blythkd. The saw I use more than anything else on medium sized trees is a 925. These are popping up all the time and parts are pretty easy to find. Plenty less expensive than those orange and white things too. Built solid as a rock, great power/weight and feel super balanced. Usually use a 28", but they can handle longer, especially in soft wood.

There's one more guy you can try - Buford Parrish of Parrish Implements in Brandenburg,Ky.His # :502-228-1462,but be prepared to pay dearly. He has 9 tractor trailer loads of parts & he won't take a dime less than what he wants for those parts (& he's about 85,I guess he thinks he's gonna take it with him,or live forever).I have bought things from him,but only when I'm at the end of my rope.Be careful though,he can be a somewhat slick character.Kinda reminds me of a high pressure car salesman,Lol.

Thank you 5terrysupersaws and undee70ss for the heads up. I am not on Ebay everyday so I appreciate the help. The handle is cracked but not broken off like mine. We will see what happens. I am certain I am not the only one who could use these rare parts. Have a good day!

Update: Well, I didn't win the bid on the 540 basketcase parts saw on Ebay. I kept bidding in the last moments hoping to end up with it when time ran out and I was well over my budget. Well, that along with my wife asking me why I was attempting to spend that much on broken parts (she doesn't get it)! Oh well, maybe next time.
