I have had this question in my mind for a while now, will a handle/fuel & oil tank assembly from a model 8800 mount/work on my 540 as a replacement? My 540 handle assembly is cracked on the bottom where what I call the platform is (the area where you would hold the saw with your foot while cranking). As well, it leaks fuel from the seam where the 2 sides/halves mate when filled more than 3/4 tank full of fuel. I have considered using Red Kote to seal so I can buy some time to source a new "Housing-Engine" as its called. I know Leon had one for sale for an 8800 a while ago, not sure if or how many of the parts are interchangeable between the 540 and 8800. As far as I can tell the only difference I see is the 540 "Housing-Engine" is made of plastic and the model 8800 is made of aluminum.
Any insight on this matter is appreciated!
Thanks, -Matt

Matt, just a couple of things to consider. First, the fuel/oil caps are different, so they won't interchange. There's a cover piece that acts as a mount for the ignition switch on the 8800 that you'll need. On the 540, it's all molded into the handle. The boss for mounting the front handle bar is a bit different. The 8800 has a piece of U channel that helps the handle mount flush. Oh, and the bolts are different also that mount the front handle bar. There may well be a few other items to consider, but these come to mind.

Thanks Dan for the insight. I most definitely am in need of the housing-engine (handle/ oil & fuel tank) now. I was out cutting wood, my saw got pinched, my buddy grabbed the handle and SNAP, the whole handle broke off. So now, I have to find another handle/tank assembly. Next week I will be making some phone calls. Would be nice to find a saw that's seized as a donor.

If Leon or Joyce don't have the handle you need, you can try either Bob Johnson (607-638-9297),or Buford Parrish (502-228-1462).There's another guy too - Steve Isles, but I don't have his # handy.

I am going to give it a day or two so as to see if I get a reply from Leon, Joyce, or anyone else before I make a phone call. Maybe someone else on here will see this and reach out as well. Thank you for your help and suggestions. I will update if anything changes. Thank you! -Matt
