Today I did a little investigation & found that a D096 mount bar will fit on a C series saw.I think I read a post from a couple of yrs.ago where Leon had said this.I was told by an old guru that the oil hole didn't line up.Obviously he must've been thinking of something else.As a lot of us know, the F014 bar was discontinued quite some time ago.I was getting a bit worried with my recent purchase of an XP-1000 (in the C series class of saws).I'm sure the 100cc saw can pull a 30+ in..404 chain without a problem. When I put the D096 bar on a C5 & saw the adjuster & oil holes line up correctly I was elated. The only problem is now the D096 bars have been discontinued.

I have a 550 which needs a D096 or D196 bar and I can't find any Large ones (I'm after a 36" BAR) - or any size come to that matter here in the UK, but I've read on this forum (I think) that:
You can make a large Husky mount D009 bar fit with a little work. File the adjuster holes upwards so they open into the bar channel and you're good to go. It only takes about ten minutes to do both holes so you can flip it. You are basically making a D096 mount by doing that. A chain file is a good file to use.
So will a D009 mount bar fit your C series with a little work? Or possibly for me and my needs, what mount is your C series?

The C series used an F014 mount bar,but as I said they're obsolete. There are a few Carlton F014 mount bars on eBay,but they're 3/8 pitch. This could be used if you convert your sprocket from .404 pitch to a 3/8 pitch. I did play around with the idea of using a D009 mount bar until I found out that the D096 (or D196 ) bar would work without any conversion work. The slot for the bar studs on a D009 would have to be filed out a bit as well by 1/2 mm. I don't see why you can't convert & use a Husky D009 mount bar on your 550.The best thing to do is put a D009 bar on your 550 to confirm your findings.I didn't have a D009 bar here to try that.

We started using the Homelite G5 mount bars on C Series and similar decades ago. Is that a D096 mount? I apologize but we sold mostly Homelite bars for Homelites and a few Oregon bars for Stihl, Echo, McC, etc. so I'm not that good with non-Homelite bar numbers.
I haven't realized that good bars for our Homies were becoming that hard to come by. Maybe I need to start collecting bars:)

Ed, this is great info for sure. I haven't experimented much myself, but I do remember some people in the past talking about running different bars on the Cs, XPs, 1050, 2000s, etc. The point was to be careful where the chain will ride if the bar isn't as wide in the rear where it mounts. The chain can contact the guide bar plates and even eat into the boss of the clutch cover and crankcase where the bar studs are located. Anyway, just something else to make sure gets checked.

Collecting bars isn't a bad idea,I'm starting to hoard a few myself.Lol The bar mount game can be quite confusing, especially when you're collecting more than one brand of saw.The older & bigger Remington saws also used the F014 mount & the smaller saws used the D096 & D196 mount bars. Some of the older Poulans & the Macs used the same mount in the D176. I went to my local saw shop about 6 mo.ago & I told him what I needed for a particular saw as far as the bar mount went.He told me I knew more about the bar mount patterns than he did, which totally blew me away. Now you've referred to the "G5" mount, which I believe this is the first time I've heard of it.I surmise that Homelite had their own bar mount pattern that they referred to.I do remember a post back not too long ago where someone (I think Classec,AKA Charles) referred to a G3 or G4 mount on the SEZ (which was a unique bar mount) that had sideways elongated adjuster slots.

Dan,now that's something I hadn't taken into account (about the bar plates being chewed up & the chain cutting into the crankcase itself). When I put the D096 bar on the saw I couldn't put a chain on because the bar was a 3/8 pitch & the sprocket was a .404 pitch. If the bar needs to be brought out away from the crankcase couldn't S clips be used for that purpose?

Yes G3, G4, G5 were Homelite bar mount configuration callouts. For instance, a Homelite 20" sprocket tip bar for a SXL was a SP-20381-G5, it's pretty self explanatory. Power Tip was a PT, hard tip was a GW (gas welded) and that's about it. Again, I know Homelite bar numbers but I'm not very good with Oregon numbers and the like.

Just the opposite for me Brent.I'm getting to where I can decode some of the Oregon bars, but know nothing about any of the other bar brands coding. For example an Oregon 280RNDD096 is a 28 in.bar with a D096 mount,I don't know what the 3rd digit means or the letters RND.The first 2 digits will denote the length of the bar.

Greg,thanks,but there's no RN code,as in 280RNDD096.I get the rest of the code - 28=bar length,0=gauge (.050),D=3/8 pitch,& D096=bar mount.

I can't take all of the credit here for bringing the D096 & D009 bars on a C series saw to light.I had some help from my good friend Tim,AKA Fossil.I'm not a glory hog.
