I Finally Got A Good XP-1000 After Over 2 1/2 Yrs.Waiting

Yep,I picked the saw up on eBay.I've seen them there before,but were pretty much untouchable price-wise.The good thing is that I have 2 parts saws already & a bunch of parts I bought along the way (cylinder,piston kit,air filter cover & filter,rear handle assembly,carb kits,etc.).I'm pretty excited about this saw & I'll get some pics here as soon as I get the saw.

Congrats! I’ve done this sort of thing a couple of times now. Bought a saw that I really want only to get it home and be a bit disappointed. I spend about as much accumulating parts as it did to buy the saw in the first place , then sure enough a great condition saw shows up for a good price b and you end up with two!

I’d love to get my hands on one of them big ole Homelite!

I don't really think I could get tired of a 100cc saw.Lol I dug out the old bar & chain that came on the 1st XP-1000 that I got almost 3 yrs.ago.It took some time,but I put a wire wheel in my drill & went over the bar to remove most of the rust.It was pitted quite a bit in some places,that's the way I got it back then.The chain is almost like new as far as the cutters go.There was one link that was seized & a little penetrating oil & a good sized needle nose pliers broke it free.I'm still pretty stoked about this saw coming! I think I have a spike on one of the other saws,that's tomorrow's project.

The XP-1000 finally showed up today after waiting since Oct.25th.It got here late (I was grilling dinner when it arrived),so I didn't really have much time to go through it thoroughly.I checked it for spark & was surprised to see that it did indeed have good spark.Of course I had to give it a prime to see if it'd fire up & it did just that.I'll need to get a new part for the recoil cover,there are a few spokes broken out.I also need to take a look at the recoil to see why it's not engaging all the time.The plug wire looks like an automotive wire.I planned on looking at the fuel filter,but when I reached into the tank I thought there was a metal fuel line in it.Did these saws have a metal line at one point in time?I'll see about getting pics here tomorrow.

Nope, no metal line...that's a rock-hard piece of rubber!

That's kinda what I thought about the fuel line not being made of metal.As I remembered on my other XP-1000s the line was made of rubber.I've never seen a line that petrified.I haven't quite decided if I want to take the tank front off,or take the handle assembly off to replace the line in the tank.Since the saw is in the C series class it should be pretty much the same - pull the 6 or 8 screws out that hold the recoil assembly & the handle on,pull the carb & the reed assembly out,disconnect the outside fuel line (maybe replace that line too) & the nipple for the line is exposed.I've never had to replace the inside tank line on any of my C series saws yet.Pretty simple saws to work on till you get into the ignition system,but once you've done that it's not so intimidating anymore.Lol

I did a little work on the XP-1000 today.I pulled the recoil off & the cylinder fins are unusually clean.The recoil however was pretty dirty,I cleaned it up & it's working fine now.I also pulled the tank cover off & it's a good thing I did because even with the cover off I had a helluva time getting the old fuel line off.I had to put heat on the fuel line to get it off.Then it was the same for putting a new line on.

    I went to the IPL to get a part # for a gasket & found there was no gasket used on that saw.It says to use Homelite cement 27788.What would be a good substitute to use?I also found that the drivecase cover is cracked.I should have a good one on one of my parts XP saws.

I would recommend yamabond or permatex grey. Goes on much like rtv but sits up hard and bonds well. Used to join case halves on motorcycles and atvs, should be up to the task!

I didn't really have much of a chance to do much with the XP,but yesterday I did manage to get the tank cover cleaned up.Today I'll get at the tank & clean that up & then put the Yamabond on to secure the 2 pieces.I'll also dig out the other 2 XPs to see what I can scavenge from them.I mentioned earlier that I needed a recoil part,but I couldn't think of what the part was called.It hit me like a bolt of lightening when I looked at the IPL,it's the fan housing.

I finished cleaning the other tank portion today & put Yamabond on it & glued it back together.I gotta wait till tomorrow noon,at least for it to be cured.

I think a fan housing from a C-51,71,91 will work on a xp if I'm not mistaken.

Yes,I believe you're right.I have 2 parts XPs that I still need to dig out.I might be able to just swap out the entire assembly.

I'm happy to say the XP-1000 is a runner! I put fuel in the tank & was pleased to find no leaks.I had to remove the anti-spit back cover from the carb to prime it & it took off running.It was a tad too lean on the carb adjustment & I had to step up the idle a hair too.

      I also found the throttle lock pin & spring are missing & the recoil I thought I had fixed is acting up again.One time it'll catch & the next several it won't.I'm jokingly calling this saw the "Binford 1000" from Tim Allen's t.v. show Home Improvement.Very happy so far.Now I need to put a bar & chain on the beast.

I dug out the parts XPs today,but the recoil wasn't on the original one & the 2nd XP didn't come with one.I searched around & found the recoil & I noticed the bearings in it were quite dry.I lubed them up & put it on the newest XP & it works great.Now I need to find the clutch cover.The original XP has the throttle lock pin & spring I need too.After I put the recoil on I had to fire it up again,Lol It's a bit on the rich side now.

What type of recoil does that saw have?

I don't know what type recoil it has on it.It's not like the ones on the C series saws.It has a bearing which fits over a race & the race is attached to the flywheel.

      I found the other clutch cover today & put the bar & chain on it that I'd cleaned up a couple of weeks ago.I also removed the throttle lock pin & spring from the original XP that I broke the rear handle on almost 3 yrs.ago.

     When I fire up the saw it wants to race at a higher than normal speed.After about 20-30 sec.it idles down to where it should be.I don't know if that's an indication that it needs new crank seals or not.I was going to get some pics on here today,but I ran out of daylight.

I think Homelite referred to it as an overrunning bearing. It's the same idea a a sprag clutch, spins freely in one direction and grabs in the other. They used it during the mid-late 60s. The C51,71,and 91 had it. 995D and G also. 1000 and 1100, and early 1020s. Maybe even the very first 1130, but not positive. It's the same type of clutch used on a 150, just different parts, not as heavy duty.
