You were close Jasper,I believe it takes a 10615,only off by one number.I haven't been able to do anything the last couple days due to my legs swelling.I had to go for a doppler yesterday to rule out clots.I hope to pull it apart today to see exactly what I need.I did find a new rim that I knew I had stashed away in my parts bin. Does anyone know what way the rotation is for taking the nut off to get the clutch drum off?I'm beginning to think that it was put on with an impact wrench.Of course I can't really "put my back into it".Lol

Clutch should be counterclockwise and use impact to take off

Thanks Scott! I just want to clarify,is that for the clutch,or the nut that holds the rim & drum on? Ed

The nut is standard thread (counterclockwise), the clutch is reverse (clockwise).

Thanks Leon! I guess it's time to get the impact driver out again.I only use it 2-3 times per yr.,but I'm glad I bought it. Ed

There are a couple more things that need to be attended to before it's readyto go out cutting.I don't understand why people continue to use the same recoil rope after the rope has already broken once.I only have about a 12 in.pull.The other thing that needs attention is the carb,I believe it needs a rebuild because at this time it'll only run on a prime. The surgery I had on the 8th has slowed me almost to a standstill. Well today was the first time I felt well enough to do any saw work in quite some time.I took the recoil off & was going to replace the rope due to a short pull. However, once the recoil was off I had over 3 ft.of pull. This told me that the spring must be dirty, was I ever right about that! I never saw a recoil like that one with a tiny screw to hold the plastic cover in place & a rivot (which I'm assuming isn't factory) in the first loop of spring. I also got the clutch drum nut off so I could take a look at the clutch & replace the rim.The rim I found in my parts stash is too small. The saw has the 7T large spline. For the saw being 50 yrs.old it didn't have a lot of crud builtup inside the case. Ed

I got the new recoil spring today that I ordered from Leon.Funny story about that spring - it's an aftermarket spring that was made by Herr.Back some yrs.ago Herr was a big producer of clutch drums & sprockets, maybe they still are.Anyway,Herr is located in Buffalo,N.Y.which is about 25 mi.from me.So,the spring was produced here, then shipped out to Leon in Oregon, then shipped back here when I bought it.Lol I also needed a new rim & I found a great deal (so I think) on 5 standard Oregon rims for $25.79.That comes out to a little more than $5 ea.Tomorrow if I get back in time from the doc I'll see about putting the 700 back together. I didn't get a chance to get at the 700 today.I had a dr.appointment in the middle of the day & when I got home I had to service the wood furnace for this weekend. The next thing I knew I had to get dinner going. I had something happen todayu that totally blew me away.I wrote to the seller of the XL-700 & asked him how he could call the saw a "good runner"when the recoil didn't work properly & the saw would only run on a prime.I told him that I had to buy a new recoil spring & I'd most likely have to rebuild the carb.He wrote back to me & apologized for all the problems I had with the saw.He went on to say that the person he bought the saw from wasn't very honest about this saw & some others he'd bought. He went on to say that the dishonesty would stop there. He refunded me the entire purchase price ($83).I wrote back to him & told him that I admired his honesty, but I didn't think it fair that he should take the brunt of the whole situation.I told him to figure out what he'd need to at least break even on the saw.I'm not looking for something for nothing.I just wanted to alert him that the saw was not a "good runner".I'm waiting to hear back from him to work out a deal. It's been a while since I've updated this thread.I ended up paying the seller $50 for the saw & he was satisfied.Well, today I finally grew a pair & tackled the recoil. Those recoil springs kinda intiomidate me a bit.Lol I took my time putting the spring back in place, then the biggest problem was getting the little screw that holds the top plastic piece to get started.I found that a magnetized screwdriver helps a lot.I think I got kinda lucky getting the pulley to catch on the spring. So far so good. Now I had about 6 in.of rope hanging loose out of the recoil & it didn't seem to have much tension on it either.I had someone show me how to take up the slack in the rope & get more tension on the spring last May.I couldn't quite remember how,but after going the wrong way the first time I figured it out. It's all together & has good tension on the rope which is now sitting in place the way it should.Tomorrow I'll put the saw back together & see if I can get it to fire up.Bring on the recoils, they don't intimidate me any more.Lol Ed

I got the 700 put back together today. It took a while as I had to tighten up the nut for the clutch, pull the rope out of the cylinder, find a plug for it & install, put the recoil cover back on,& put the bar, chain & drivcase cover back on.I didn't know the saw was in so many pieces.Lol I gave one pull on the recoil to make sure it's going to work alright & it does.I don't exactly like the looks of the exterior fuel line,so I might replace that.I'll wait till my son gets home from work tomorrow to have him pull on the saw to try to start it.If I remember correctly it would only run on a prime,so I might have to pull the carb & rebuild it. It's a runner! My son was getting ready to go out for a while & I asked him if he'd try to start the 700.I told him "switch on,choke out,Throttle lock on".He thought the throttle lock was the decomp,I told him not on this saw.He gave a few pulls & got nothing,so I told him I'd look at the carb.I pulled the top cover off the carb which is the pump side & it had fuel in it & I checked the pump diaphragm - it was sofy & pliable.I put the cover back on & thought to myself that the saw should start.I then figured that he didn't pull the choke on,so I pulled on the choke, flipped the switch on,locked the throttle,& gave 2 pulls & it fired.I pushed in the choke & pulled again & it fired right up .It throttles up nicely & idles well too.Now I just gotta wait for the exhaust to clear out of the house.Lol Ed
