Since this is a multi-purpose saw & not a chainsaw (would be a 540 if it were a chainsaw),there's only one tank; that's the fuel tank. I tried starting the saw on a prime, but as soon as the prime was used,it'd die. I decided to take the carb back off as it needed to be rebuilt possibly anyway. I pulled the carb apart; this time I pulled the fuel pump diaphragm off to have a look at the screen. I knew something was up when I pulled the fuel line; it was like a geyser. The inlet screen was totally plugged with what must've been the old fuel line.I cleaned the tank out last fall right after I bought it. There was like black goo under the screen plugging up everything. I gave it a bath in Seafoam in the ultrasonic cleaner twice; then let it soak for quite some time. I'll reassemble it tomorrow as I believe the diaphragms are in good shape. Hopefully it'll be enough to get this old hog running. If not I've got a rebuild kit on the way.

I went to reassemble the carb this a.m.& there was a problem where the inlet screen goes.I should be able to see light through to the other side where the needle fits & I couldn't.No matter how much compressed air I blew through it it wouldn't open up.Finally I took a very fine piece of wire & put it through, then blew it out with air & was good to go.I put it back on the saw & within a couple pulls it fired, but won't stay running. It's going to need the rebuild kit as the metering diaphragm was questionable to begin with.

Since this is a multi-purpose saw & not a chainsaw (would be a 540 if it were a chainsaw) No, it would be a 8800 if a chainsaw.

Really? They're almost one in the same aren't they - 540 & 8800? No they are different. Many parts do not interchange between the two.

As it turns out,it looks like this saw will never run again.I took a closer look at the boot today & it's no good. The part # is 97263B which doesn't seem to exist anywhere.I thought the 540 boot was the same, but that part # is 97261A.

My motto is "never say never".Of all places,I found a boot at Randy's Small Engine Repair for $30 + free shipping! I bought a boot from him on Ebay about 2 yrs.ago for my 540 & paid $40 back then.I just went to his Ebay store & he doesn't even have them listed there.

I'd like to know if it's this simple to install the boot.I pulled the flange off the saw & put the boot in it from the inside, then I remounted the flange with the 2 screws.I used the boot I had on hand for my 540,just in case you're wondering how I got it overnight from Randy's.Lol edit:apparently it's not that simple. There's an adapter & a gasket involved somewhere along the way.Now I need to know how to install this boot properly.
