I played around a little today with a java program to do date of manufacture lookups based on serial numbers. About the only free file sharing site I could come up with was the onedrive associated with my pc, so I stuck a copy up there. Here's the link: linkIf anybody wants a copy sent to them, I could send it by email. Not sure I can attach in a PM, but that may work too.
So, it's a runnable java .jar which means you need to have java runtime on your device. Most things do, but if not it won't run. You may also need to select it and do an "open with" and pick the java runtime if it's not associated by default. Sure it has plenty of bugs and unforeseen cases. It'll recognize a 4 or 5 character entry as a Lot #, 6 or 7 characters as a lookup from Joyce's sales records and 8 or 9 characters as described in the memo. If you can download and run it, please hammer it and let me know what's buggy, any recommendations for improvement ad I'll see what can be done.

Using the lookup program which in this case is accessing Joyce's sales records, 977461 would be somewhere around October 1959.

That is very cool (the program). I’ve thought about making something similar for a long time but never had the time. Very well done!

That is very cool (the program). I’ve thought about making something similar for a long time but never had the time. Very well done! Thank you very much. Yea, I had so much frustration trying to understand all the permutations of these serial/lot numbers I found myself coding it in my head, so figured might as well throw it out in java. I like C and C++, but writing any gui using java and swing is just so much easier. Really hope everyone will play with it and help to improve it. There has to be many cases where it's not right. I haven't really looked at the Canadian serials to even see if they work out. I had been thinking of trying to come up with a part number search program that could identify all saws that a particular part was used on and bring up IPL pages, or start with IPLs and then search other saws sharing similar parts, but hit several roadblocks with using pdfs inside swing. Hopefully one day I can get something, but it's a much harder problem. Dan

I have a serial number of - 0791632. Model 6-22 Any ideas? Model 6-22's on J. Wilson's sales records have 6 digit serial numbers . If that's the case, Model 6-22 SN:791632 .. was manufactured in the later part of 1958 .

Thanks! Thats pretty cool. This the oldest Homelite I have so far. The guy that sold it to me said his dad bought it for his camp late sixties or early seventies. It looks like it’s been sitting a long time. Still feels like it has nice compression. I’m interested to see if it’s still firing.
I’ll check out the date stamp on the carburetor once I get into it.

Thanks Leon, I was set to pick up this nice looking Buz for $100 but it appears that the guy made a "mistake" on the price when he posted it so it jumped to $225. Obviously he received many inquiries and decided to bump the price up.

Maybe they are hot property in nice condition?

I honestly don't think it was in bad shape, he says it's complete and has great compression, just hoped the coil was ok. Either way I'm not paying that much so I'll keep looking, don't have a Buz.

My serial code has 7 digits and no letters at the front. Old blue XL-12 that I have gotten to start without starter fluid so I've decided to learn more about it since I probably can fix it up. First time saw rebuild. 2990815 is the serial. Hope you guys can help me out!
