HI everybody, There is a package deal on craigslist not too far for me, and one of the saws is an XL500 automatic. Green handle and side cover, S/N 19895415. I was texting back and forth with the seller and he mentioned that "the big one doesn't seem to have compression but the 2 others do." Other than rings, piston, cylinder, is there something "easy" that might cause a no compression on the saw? Is there a compression release on this saw? All I can do is drool over the picture..... Thanks R&R

My XL 500 doesn't have a release. Possible a broken reed could cause low compression. Best to remove the muffler and inspect the piston.

I had a guy tell me that a saw that that he had didn't have any compression because the recoil wouldn't engage the flywheel. I'd ask the guy how he determined that it didn't have any compression.

Thanks guys. You might have something there Sawnami because in the picture of the saw the recoil rope is hanging out a little like there is an issue there.

I have 3 XL500's, none has a release. Someone on this list suggested using 50% acetone and ATF mix in the cylinder to free up stuck rings, sorry but I don't remember who. Anyway I have used that method on several saws and it works like a charm. Squirt some in the plug hole or exhaust port, turn the motor over a little and wait. Repeat a couple of times. The acetone dissolves the crud sticking the rings, the ATF lubes the parts I guess. Anyway, that may just fix the problem. Of course you cannot try this until you own the saw and it falls into the "rings, piston, cylinder" comment you made above.

All great ideas guys. All for nought however. I texted the owner and he told me it was sold. The original listing mentioned he didn't want to seperate the 3. I think he might have gotten a bit perturbed when I asked him if the recoil was connecting and he was sure the piston was going up and down. Honest question I thought. Probably someone I wouldn't want to deal with anyway. :-) LOL. At least that helps the CAD syptoms... By the way you guys have some very enviable collections.... R&R

I always ask if a saw pulls over if the seller doesn't state it clearly in the description. I keep a pump-up sprayer on hand with a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone. The ultimate solvent wintergreen oil.
