I bought a c-52 and was wondering if there is a larger sprocket i could get so i could get the chain going a little faster. I know these were low rpm saws but i love using mine even though it goes in slow motion. This is my first old homelite, ive been after one for a while. I think i paid to much since it didnt run but its a smooth operator now, just a little slow

Welcome Michael! I can't answer your question, but congrats on getting the saw running! Is that a picture of it in your post? I have an XL 700 looks similar from a distance ;-) How long is that bar? Don't worry about the overprice (ha-ha) You got a great feeling of satisfaction getting it running right? That's got to be worth something... What's next?

Yup, thats it, id like to give it a good paint job some day, maybe this winter. I restore tractors so its a hobby i love. I like the looks of your 700, has class. Its a 36"bar. The original bar was so wore out you couldnt cut straight. Getting it running is worth something, i started it yesterday just to hear it run. It wont get a lot of use, more for the occasional big log. Seen to run the big bar pretty good.

The chain is a 3/8" its not a skip tooth, the chain that was on it was and it sucked.

The chain is a 3/8" its not a skip tooth, the chain that was on it was and it sucked. You must have a rim drive then, as I believe that came with .404 pitch. If so perhaps you can find an 8 tooth drive?, If you can, great, but then you may run out of adjustment on your chain... or perhaps take the rakers down slightly to use the grunt of the old beast This can be slippery slope though.

If it's got a rim sprocket, I'd change it to square chisel .404 and tune it to 6500 RPM in the cut. It's supposed to be capable of up to a 30" bar with .404.

Doesn't have a rim sprocket, I think its a 9 tooth sprocket and someone said you can get a 12 tooth to speed it up a little.

I don't think that was offered on there in a 3/8", no problem just make sure the clutch shoes are fully encased in the clutch drum, I had picked a saw up once where somebody put the wrong drum on the saw and messed up the shoes.

I have a C5 and I asked an older mechanic how to get it to perform better and he said install a C7 or C9 reed cage. According to him the C5 had a single reed and the others had a multiple reed style. I don't know if a C-52 is the same as a C-5 but it might be an option.

According to my "book" of service information, the C-5 through C-72 used a single "flapper" type reed valve. Not until the XP-1000 through the 1130G did they use the 4-reed pyramid reed setup. The latest generation saws in this family (the 2000 through 3100G) used the 6-reed pyramid system. Like others have mentioned, I doubt there is any rim drive clutch option beyond a 8 tooth (maybe a 9) for either a 3/8" or .404" pitch chain; unless it is a custom fabricated type like the competition guys are know to use.

I thought these saws had teh same pyramid cage but had 2 flappers and the c9 had 4.
Will any of these 4 reeds or 6 reeds fit the c52?

I know this is an old topic but I have some time off for the holidays and I read in this earlier post about changing reed valves to increase performance. I remembered that I had an xp 1020 for parts and it had a pyramid style reed valve. With a little modification to the intake manifold I was able to install it on a c-72 and boy howdy what a difference!! Much better throttle response! The original post asked about speeding up a c-52. Although I used a c-72 I think both saws are very similar.
