well at any rate i got a pull cover that is somewhere close to the same year as the saw. lets assume that we dont know if its a super xl or if its a super xl12. its the old blue and white paint scheme, it has the super xl bore size and the serial number tag is located below the kill switch .... ive heard that homelite put that serial number tag in that location for only a short period of time.... can we narrow it down based on this info?

The tags on the pull starter are the pre 8 digit serial number and pre 1972. No one knows how to to really tell what year it is by the 7 digit code. MY belief is, if you have super xl or xl-12 with a serial tag on the starter assembly its the first generation models. Meaning the 60's model up til 1973. I guess the only way we would know a true 7 digit year is by confirming it with the date the original owner purchased it.

the one thing (other than bore size) that seems to convince me that this saw is a super xl-12 is that it has the single reed valve.

the one thing (other than bore size) that seems to convince me that this saw is a super xl-12 is that it has the single reed valve. The Super XL-12 and the XL-12 both used the single reed. One thing that is different thou is the reed stop for the XL-12 has a different part number than the reed stop for the Super XL-12. Homelite eventually started fitting the XL-12 with a pyramid reed.
