This memo will help determine the year of manufacture of 8 and 9 digit Homelite saws made for the US market. 7 digit serials were used up to the implementation of the data found in this chart but there doesn't appear to be any information available for the layout of the 7 digit serials. This picture show a serial tag from an EZ Automatic. The EZ Auto was made in the early '70s and, according to Acres, entered the lineup in 1969. Uploaded with ImageShack.usThe Service memo above may not be completely accurate because this serial tag is eight digits and begins with a zero. A zero therefore says 1970 not 1980 as stated in the memo.

This is another example of the serial number configuration. The Blue SXLAO of the early '70s was built without the manual oil pump installed. The pump was available as a dealer option. These two pictures tell us this saw was made in 1971. It has an eight digit serial. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Conformation of the 8 digit serials of the late '60s and early '70s. I've been reading through a pile of service memo and came across this one for the EZ. Note the date of the memo and the first digit of the serial numbers mentioned in the memo. There have been some comments that the service memo dated 3/85 is confusing. Well, from this memo we know the 8 digit serial was in use in 1969. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I inherited an Xl, Auto oiler, short bar which I think makes this the XL12. The lot number is G7088, S/N is 104444.
From what I understand from this thread, the saw must have been built in the 1960s, which would not be a surprise to me.
Until I find a parts catalog, I can't even start to fix the thing. Biggest problem is that it is sucking bar oil into the cylinder. Was running fine. Having read some of the posts related to another type saw, it might be the oil pump, but something in the oil tank.
As is obvious, I am totally new to this endeavor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Fred
