Now that it’s already got a starting point from the hot water, some solvents may help to soften the glue or whatever adhesive that was originally used. Something like heptane may work but it will likely remove any paint that is on it too. It will also eat any rubber it comes in contact with. If they used something more similar to JB weld or something like Blue Magic quick steel epoxy, I’m not sure what would help to remove that. The quick steel may would work to patch the hole where it is leaking then redkote inside.

I drilled the center out. Pretty much the perfect size for a tygon hose. Seems to fit pretty tight. I’m thinking that I’m going to try and make this work as is. I can’t bring myself to pay a bunch of money for a part that’s not completely necessary. I like to use original parts as much as possible but sometimes you gotta compromise. I’ll try to use the inlet pipe on the xl900 saws so that the hose doesn’t pinch as it comes out of the tank. How about a used XL-701 crankcase/tank ? ... similar casting # 63003-C, factory welded seam, intact elbow fitting, good condition. Know a guy in Oregon that has one :{) www.leonschainsawpartsandrepair.com/apps/search?q=U2839#/

Here is the fitting I found. Honestly I don't remember taking that out so it may not be the one that came out of it. flic.kr/p/2pkE51a

Well I decided that I would just go ahead and split the case completely since the bond was already compromised. It wasn’t that difficult to get it split. I used my heat gun and box cutter knife. I watched the temperature closely and watched for any signs of overheating or paint damage. 300 - 350 degrees Fahrenheit worked. Still lots of varnish in the tank. Oh boy!

Trevor, have you been in the carb yet?It makes me wonder what the carb will be like if the tank is that bad.

I’m not overly interested in fighting with this bonded case much more. Thanks for the reminder. I forgot that he had these 700 parts still. I’ll try to transfer the model tag over from the XL700 case. It’s not technically “original”, but I think it’s an acceptable solution. (to me anyway)

I have the “new case” Thanks Leon. You saved the day again! First things first. Bubble bath. I think I will start a new thread for the “rebuild”. Lots of work to do. It may take awhile to get it all together and try to get it running again!
