I never knew what they were called. I always called it a coil on plug. Now that I need one, it looks like they are a "Transformer". I need one for a 450, anyone one have an extra? Joe.

Yeah buddy I got one here for you. Do you prefer new or used? I just found a nice 450 on the shelf with no plug or transformer. What would you want for the used one? If it's as bad as Ed says, I might just put the saw back on the shelf. Thanks, Joe.

I just love how Joe always finds a saw buried on the shelf somewhere and he’s just like hmmm what do we have here. 🤣 and it’s not like an XL or a Super 2, it’s like a 450 or a 550. 😁

Well, your kind of new here so a little history. I was 4th generation in the tree business. When Dad retired in 85 I let the business go. I was burnt out of 24/7 work. I went to work for UPS, but kept my MTE (Maryland Tree Expert) license, and did contract work on the side. I had about 40 of Dad’s saws, mostly Homelites. After Dad passed in 2004, I spent a whole week of vacation getting every saw running. Then about a year later I needed a saw and couldn’t get one running. I threw a major temper tantrum and sold all of them but a few big ones. Anything over 70CC’s I kept. I had trouble getting one of his Super 1050’s running and found HOH and AS. Guys would ask about saws and I’d think, I used to have a bunch of those. I went on a quest to find replacements for all of the ones I sold. I tried to stay to my 70CC or bigger plan, but then I wanted a Super EZ. That’s what I learned to climb with. Now I have a pile of little saws. I found a Stihl dealer in WV that had a garage full of old saws. I bought 19 from him for $20 each. Every couple years I run out of shelf space and have a purge. I’ll sell a few of the saws we didn’t use when I was growing up. I also have 4 John Deere’s, a 265, 318, X500, and X540. I’m building a custom show tractor out of the 318, so I started cleaning my tractor shed. On a top shelf I found a David Bradley, a Kee Line, two Lombards, and the 550 I just sold. It was a nice saw, but just wasn’t loud enough, like my C72 with the stack muffler. If I get this 450 running I think I’ll keep it as a mid size working saw. I had planned on getting Dad’s last Super 1050 off the shelf this weekend and playing with it. I haven’t done any milling in a couple years and that was the last time I ran it. I hope the carb is not all gooped up. I love the sound of a 1050.

I hope the carb is not all gooped up. I love the sound of a 1050. Fascinating story Joe, all of my chainsaw experience relates to firewood. Growing up I used Homelite chainsaws exclusively. Grew up on a farm near Winchester, Virginia. Both my uncle and grandfather heated their houses with wood stoves. I can’t even guess how many cords of wood we would split a year. Most of it by splitting maul. My uncle built a wood splitter when I was 16. That would have been 1992. The saw of choice was a 360. It was a capable saw and we used it regularly for many many years. It is a 1981 model and we were using it well into the mid 90s. It had a hard life that’s for sure sure. Three years ago I acquired my grandfather and uncle‘s saws. A 750, 360, XL-101, XL. At first we couldn’t find the 360 even though that was the one we used the most. Some weeks went by after I had taken home the 750, XL-101, XL. Then one day I was helping my uncle with something on the farm and out of the blue he says the 360s in your Pop Pops truck. It was an old Dodge that have been sitting in the driveway of the house for over 20 years without running. So I ran over to my grandfather’s house after finishing up at the farm and opened the door of the old Dodge and there it was the legendary 360. Not long ago I tore it down and cleaned everything up, replace the fuel lines and oil lines, and intake boot, carb, and a few miscellaneous things. I kid you not the piston and cylinder looked fantastic.

Your starting to play my games. Thank you and you really boosted my spirits today. I bought a bunch of T111 siding for my shed. Got it Monday and it rained all day. Tuesday was pretty nice, so I went out and the two sheets on top looked like skateboard ramps, I got 3 sheets up. It's a royal pain to hang siding by yourself, especially when the floor is six feet off the ground. Got the last two sheets up today. Took me about 5 hours to hang two sheets. The wind caught each sheet once, just as I was getting ready to put the first screw in. Then I had to chase the sheet down in the woods. Just as I was finishing up my wife came to check in and tell me she was heading down to her mom's. Then she said I had a box in the mail. I was not expecting that at all. I went to 3 auto parts stores looking for a DJ6J, no one had it. It will be in tomorrow. I thought this was a complete saw, but it's missing the bar and top handle. Looking at the pic on Acres site, I think I have a near mint bar to fit it. I'm still going to try and start it when I get the plug. I have a Zelle and PayPal account if you want me to send payment, or, if you can wait a week or two, I'll be up to sight in one of my Savage 1899's. I'm going on a SC pig hunt, we are hunting 3 days and you are allowed a pig a day. I'm taking 3 1899's and hoping to get to use one each day. One was made in 1902, one in 1912, the other in 1950. I can throw a couple of my favorite saws on the back for show and tell. If there is a good place we can grab lunch? This is the one I need to sight in. It was made in 1902, it is factory engraved with special wood, optional checkering, optional pistol grip, and special butt plate. The scope is a 1925 Fecker 10X target scope.

Nice rifle. I have killed several deer with a 99 in a Savage 303. Hard to get ammo.

I put the new plug in and the transformer on. Primed the carb and cranked. I thought it fired on the first pull, but cranked and cranked and nothing. How can you tell if the saws with a transformer on the plug are firing? Remember, there is no top handle on this one, so it's kind of hard holding it down. Feels like it has great compression. When I prime the carb I put a pretty good shot of mix in it. It usually floods them a bit, so it takes 8-10 good pulls. I went way past that. I'm going to let it set for a while and try cranking again with out priming in case it is just flooded.

Went back out later and put a really big squirt of mix in the carb and it fired right up, so I know it will run.

Nice rifle. I have killed several deer with a 99 in a Savage 303. Hard to get ammo. I got lucky and a friend that helped run a table at most of the big shows out West, bought lots of obsolete ammo for $5 a box over the past 20 years. At one point he offered up something like 50 boxes of 375 Win for half the going price, He could have put it on Gun Broker and made a fortune, but he wanted to get rid of it in one sale because he was moving, and this was all pre Covid. I bought 10 boxes of 303 190 gr Silvertips for $40 a box. I'm stocked up for a while.

Installing T-111 is no fun. That transformer was on my 750 and I ran it last weekend. I wanted to send you a tested unit. We can square up when you come through town to sight in your rifles. No worries. Lunch would be great. Beautiful rifle btw. Keep in touch.
